It's been a case of 'near miss' for Man United in the last couple of seasons, more especially since Olé Gunnar Solkjaer took over as the manager. Just last season alone, Man United lost out in three semi-final matches - versus Sevilla in the UEL, Man City in the Carabao Cup and Chelsea in the FA Cup. All very painful losses. Those last-four losses revealed how behind the team really was in terms of really challenging for honours. Manchester United last won a trophy in 2017 (the Europa League triumph). But going forward, Man United with the acquisition of Bruno Fernandes 12 months ago and the continuous improvement of Marcus Rashford has propelled Olé Gunnar Solkjaer's men into believing that this season is actually that season where they get to show something tangible for the character and a strong winning mentality that they've developed over the past 12 months. A success in the Carabao Cup will boost the players' belief in their ability to win trophies. It will also send a strong message to local rivals as Man United are currently showing that they are genuine title challengers for the EPL. But before them are noisy neighbors Manchester City. United need to overcome Pep Guardiola and his boys in the one-legged semi-final fixture set to take place tonight at Old Trafford. Manchester City themselves have proved to be the superior Manchester side over the past decade. Manchester City have won 6 trophies since the last time Man United won one in 2017. Victory for Man United against local rivals Man City will surely be the sweetest thing, knowing it will be a springboard to potential success.
